back to school!

Summer flew by in front of our eyes, at the speed of a lightning bolt across the sky. Really, it flew and as I look at the calendar and adjust my eyes to date, I see that school is nearing around the corner. Ah, yes! It's time to go back to class. Some of us dread this time, some of us don't. I actually look forward to starting my classes at Concordia this semester. And as I gear up for school, I fantasize about all the wonderful things I will have to equip myself with. As an English major, I do a lot of writing and require the right tools for the job: Moleskine journals and my Waterman fountain pen

Moleskine journals come in many shapes, sizes. They are sold with soft covers and hard covers. And even if you aren't going to school in the fall, they are great for anything. Creative jobs or business types a like. They sell a variety of different folios with paper to suit your style, whichever style that may be! Moleskines are sold with blank pages, squared or lined pages.
They also have hard covers with a leather bound, or soft covers made of cardboard paper.

They also have agendas, so if you are looking to record anything for the fall and haven't broken into the Blackberry or iPhone to organize your life, the Moleskine 18-month planner is great to keep all your appointments and meetings clarified. I got mine in July and it started that month (a planner that doesn't start in September or January! I was delighted.) and it goes on until December 2010, so it will last me for the next year and a half.

I highly recommend these notebooks to anyone who is a fan of writing things down and don't necessarily always depend on their macbook or laptop computer to record everything.

Moleskines also come with little postcards inside that have great quotes about writing from renowned authors, this is an example of one with a quote by Emily Dickinson "I know nothing in the world that has as much power as a word. Sometimes I write one, and I look at it, until it begins to shine."

Moleskines are great, but I also need the write tool (get it?) to inscribe my notes in. My mother went to Paris this summer and came back with a wonderful birthday gift for me: A Waterman fountain pen. Not everyone is a fan of fountain pens, but I like them because they last forever! All that has to be done is changing the ink cartridge in them to refill it. Some fountain pens can be messy but Waterman has been in the business for years and they make quality fountain pens. The cool part too is that on their website, you can make your own pen. You choose the color of the pen's body ranging from reds, greens, blues, blacks or silver, followed by the colour trim which comes with the choice of either gold or white. Ta-da! Then you have your own custom made Waterman pen that will be like no other. Mine is red with a gold trim!

I hope this post inspires you to go back to work or school and persevere towards your own successes! Happy Saturday.

Gordon Ball at the Emporium Gallery.

Gordon Ball's I am sorry. Sincerely, Frankenstein opens at the Emporium Gallery (3035 St. Antoine Ouest #74) on Thursday August 27th (7-11pm). The exhibition will also be open on Sat August 29th + Sun August 30th (12-5pm). Private viewings available by appointment from Monday August 31st to Wednesday September 2nd 09.

About I am sorry. Sincerely, Frankenstein
'I am sorry. Sincerely, Frankenstein' is a new collection of photographs by Montreal-based photographer, Gordon Ball. Depicting self-destruction in relation to the social order, in both a fantastical and journalistic capacity, 'I am sorry. Sincerely, Frankenstein' is Ball's first solo exhibition in Montreal in over 2 years.

Artist Statement
In 1994, I started photographing my teenage friends- doing drugs for the first time, stealing booze from their parents, fighting security guards at skate spots, skinny dipping with chicks, experiencing 'first love', etc. However, in recent years I moved away from this candid, personal documentary style of photography as I was increasingly photographing for corporate clients. And, it left me feeling somewhat unfulfilled. This exhibition represents a photographic return to a subject matter and style of photography that I originally started out with. It all takes cues from a quote I once heard that, "we may be through with the past, but the past ain't through with us"- something that I genuinely believe to be true after working on this project." - Gordon Ball

About Gordon Ball
It could be argued that Montreal-born photographer, Gordon Ball was genetically predisposed to practice photography. A third generation photographer, he is the son of Doug Ball, a two-time National Newspaper photography award winner- which explains why Gordon began photographing at a very early age. In his teens, he documented both skate and punk culture, was published the world over in album layouts and publications, then attended OCAD on a scholarship. Ball has since exhibited numerously across Canada, been commissioned to photograph for Nike, Audi and IMG and, been published in Dazed and Confused, Spin and Penthouse.

David Shaw. Exhibit at Blizzarts. Montreal.

David Shaw's The Outside Dream opens at Blizzarts (3956A St-Laurent, Montreal, QC) on Thursday, August 20th from 8-11pm.
Exhibition runs till September 3rd.

About The Outside Dream
With anywhere from 4 to 6 million motorcycles in Saigon alone, Vietnam's streets are a chaotic tangle of noise, motion and pollution. Working from a series of personal photos taken from the busiest intersections throughout Vietnam, David Shaw's new collection of watercolours captures the anonymous travellers of the world's most congested urban centres, making revealing narrative portraits of the otherwise invisible.

Artist Statement
"Each painting in the series is a labour to capture an unguarded moment from an almost faceless commuter in the unending parade of Vietnam's traffic. I want the viewer to absorb not just the individual, but also the act of taking an ephemeral moment and binding it down to a piece of paper; the process of hunting for an image, shooting it, preserving it, and mounting the thing on the wall."
- David Shaw

Fold-out bed tent

Have you ever wanted a little privacy when having an out of town guest stay with you? Well this 3 in 1 tent sofa transforms, giving the user the ability to put a roof over their head for some incognito shut eye in the fold out bed...

For those of you who have ever slept on the floor at a friends place, or who may have a lot of house guests, this is such a cool idea! A fold out little cot that doubles as a little tent for privacy! Looks comfortable too. If I had one I may be tempted to take cat naps on it instead of my actual bed!

I would not mind having these!

It is fun for me to imagine strutting my stuff in these shoes. Truth is I probably would not make it too far before the pain set in, but they are KILLER. Yeah Givenchy!!
